India is home to over two million temples — from the Himalayan shrines carved into cliff faces to the colossal Dravidian complexes of the Tamil plains, the austere cave temples of the Deccan, and the golden sanctum of Amritsar. Each temple is both a cosmological map and a living community centre — hosting daily rituals, festivals, music, and education for centuries.

The temple is not merely a building but a sacred body: the sanctum sanctorum (garbhagriha) represents the womb of creation; the tower (shikhara or vimana) symbolises the cosmic mountain Meru; and the circumambulatory path (pradakshina) encodes the devotee's journey around the centre of the universe. To walk into a great Indian temple is to step inside a living cosmology.
